Why Helium is Difficult to Replace

The properties that make helium useful also make it hard to make, store, or swap.
Three rare properties
−268.9°C
Lowest boiling point of any element
Inert
Does not react with other materials
Conductive
Moves heat unusually well for a gas
It cannot be manufactured
Helium-rich gas field → Gas processing → Helium recovered
Supply exists only where natural gas holds enough helium to recover.
Why it cannot be stockpiled
Liquid helium must be kept colder than any other liquid. Even in insulated containers it slowly boils off. Once released, it escapes the atmosphere for good.

Recent Supply Shocks

Policy responses reshaped the market.
March 2026 · Qatar
Missile strikes halt the Ras Laffan complex. Helium output stops when LNG production stops.
↓
April 2026 · Russia
Temporary export controls run through the end of 2027. Asian quotas fall to 40% of 2025 levels.
↓
July 2026 · China
A temporary export ban keeps helium at home. China imports more than 85% of its supply.

The Helium Squeeze

What a sudden supply cut has meant for buyers, and where relief may come from.
2×
Spot prices for industrial helium doubled within days of the March 2026 strikes.

U.S. distributors put healthcare first
The bright spot
The squeeze is accelerating helium-free MRI designs and closed-loop recovery systems that recapture up to 90% of used helium.
