**Poolside's Read**

For generations students courted colleges. Now, colleges are courting students — a paradigm shift for college admissions.

Direct admissions isn't new. Colleges have used it for years ([Minnesota's pilot ran in 2022](https://myhighered.mn.gov/index.php/blog/direct-admissions-minnesota-shows-all-students-they-are-college-material?ref=poolside.ghost.io); [Tennessee](https://www.gse.harvard.edu/ideas/news/25/07/get-college-and-get-financial-aid-without-applying?ref=poolside.ghost.io) and [California](https://www.calstate.edu/impact-of-the-csu/community/Pages/Direct-Admission-Program.aspx?ref=poolside.ghost.io) too). What's new is the *scale*.

It's a demographic shift — handing families leverage for higher education.

## The Offer

Hundreds of U.S. colleges are now extending formal offers of admission to students who never applied. The practice is called **direct admissions**. It flips the usual order: instead of students chasing schools, many schools are now chasing students.

> These are real, binding offers of admission, often arriving with thousands in merit scholarships already attached.

As Angel Perez, chief executive of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, put it: *"Instead of a student applying to the institution, the institution applies to them."*

## Why now

- **The demographic cliff:** Driven mainly by a sustained decline in U.S. birth rates, the number of high-school graduates peaked at about 3.9 million in 2025\. [WICHE projects](https://www.wiche.edu/resources/report-u-s-high-school-graduates-will-peak-next-year-then-most-states-will-see-steady-declines-through-2041/?ref=poolside.ghost.io) the total will fall roughly 13% — to about 3.4 million, or half a million fewer — by 2041\. Fewer students means sharper competition for every seat.
- **Budgets need bodies:** Mid-sized and less-selective private campuses face deficits and have to stabilize enrollment early. Wingate University, outside Charlotte, told thousands of teens they were *already* in the class of 2030 — with $24,000 scholarships attached, no application required.

## How it works

- **Students opt in first.** Students share the basics — transcript, GPA — on a platform like the Common App or Niche. That opt-in is the catch: the offers are unsolicited, but not random. You never asked that specific school, but your profile was in the pool.
- **The school moves first.** Colleges scan that pool and send official offers to anyone clearing their academic bar.
- **No application.** No essay, no activities list, no fees.
- **Enrollment.** To enroll, a student confirms the spot and picks a campus. A short form replaces the formal application process.
