On the Balance Sheet

The bank's deposit base is its quiet strength.

ASB's cost of deposits was 0.69 percent in the second quarter of 2026, the lowest among Hawaiʻi's four largest banks and among the lowest of any exchange-traded bank in the country.

Residential mortgages make up about 44 percent of the portfolio, home equity lines nearly 15 percent, and commercial real estate about 25 percent.

It is also deeply local. Approximately 95 percent of the portfolio consists of loans secured by Hawaiʻi real estate or made to borrowers located in Hawaiʻi at origination.

ASB Receives No Proceeds from IPO

Every share in the offering was sold by existing shareholders, including Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI). The bank received no proceeds, signaling that this was not so much a capital raise, but a path to liquidity for current owners.

ASB is a national bank* with no holding company above it. Its registration statement on Form S-1 was filed with, and declared effective by, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, rather than the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Piper Sandler — an American multinational investment bank and financial services company — served as sole book-running manager. Keefe, Bruyette & Woods served as lead manager, with D.A. Davidson and Stephens as co-managers. The selling stockholders also granted the underwriters an option to purchase up to 1,208,586 additional shares.

*In U.S. banking regulation, "national bank" is a legal charter designation, not a geographical description.A national bank is chartered and supervised directly by the federal government through the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) (which is why ASB filed its Form S-1 with the OCC instead of the SEC).

HEI Proceeds to Assist with Maui Wildfire Settlement

HEI has stated that its portion of IPO proceeds will go towards reducing the new capital it must raise for its share of remaining Maui wildfire settlement payments. The utility agreed to pay $2 billion of the $4 billion settlement that followed the August 2023 fire.

For most of its modern history, ASB was a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries. On December 31, 2024, HEI sold 90.1 percent of the bank to private investors for $405 million -- retaining a 9.9 percent stake.

In the public offering, HEI sold approximately 2.0 million shares -- roughly 30 percent of its remaining stake -- for $29.5 million in net proceeds. The underwriters' subsequent full exercise of their option secured an additional $4.4 million for HEI.

What Comes Next

HEI retains approximately 6.4 percent of the bank. Those shares are subject to a 180-day lockup. After it expires, HEI has said it will consider selling them, subject to market conditions.

For ASB, public ownership brings quarterly reporting and a daily market verdict. For the owners, boards, and managers who rely on local lenders, one of Hawaiʻi's largest home lenders will now report its condition on a public schedule.
